Maryland Medicaid wants to pay for food — and it's asking operators how
Medically tailored meals through Medicaid managed care start in 2028 — feedback on the design is due October 14
Maryland is designing a way for Medicaid to cover food — medically tailored meals first, other nutrition services after — starting in 2028. Before the Maryland Department of Health writes the rules, it's collecting input from providers, community organizations, and enrollees.
If you run an assisted living facility, home care agency, or adult day program, this is the state asking you to describe the nutrition gaps you see every week — on the record, while the program is still being designed.
- The program runs through the HealthChoice managed care plans (not the waivers)
- Medically tailored meals are slated as the first covered service
- MDH is also asking how it should buy these services — that answer decides who the 2028 vendors are
